The Vancouver Art Gallery is appropriately situated in one of the most aesthetic buildings in the city – the old courthouse – and houses an extensive collection from both regional and international artists in a myriad of different mediums. Artwork ranging from oil paintings to etchings to photography and more address historical and modern issues, in addition to showcasing local talents, such Canada’s own, Emily Carr, for example.
Built in 1911, the old Vancouver Courthouse remains well preserved, with neo-classic columns and lion-statues marking the front entrance; and on the inside marble halls, thick wooden doors and a decorative dome greet visitors as they make their way toward the gallery. Located along bustling Robson Street in the heart of town, the Vancouver art Gallery, and the old courthouse for that matter, is often the site of indoor and outdoor public exhibitions, political demonstrations and other such community events.
