  Gastown

Gastown is Vancouver’s heart and soul, a great part of the city’s heritage, and today one of its most frequented neighborhoods. The center of town is adorned with a statue of Jack Deighton, who in his days known as “Gassy Jack” because he talked nonstop. Deighton was the proprietor of a rustic saloon, which became so popular among regional mill workers that they built an entire town around it.

The history of Gastown delves even deeper. After the original town was burnt to the ground in an 1886 fire, the community rebuilt and created a bustling harbor, also making it a huge trade center. The city would crash again due to the Great Depression; and rebuild again after being declared a National Historic District.

Much of early Gastown is resembled today, with cobblestone streets, early western architecture and brick walkways lining the streets. Many of the buildings are the oldest in the city, dating back to the 19th century. And the residents have somehow maintained a poignant level of modesty, honesty and outward friendliness uncommon to today’s fast-paced world. Attractions in Gastown range from nautical and historic sites, to unique shops, restaurants and parks. Don’t forget that Canada Place is just a few minutes away!
