Located in the heart of Vancouver’s renowned Chinatown, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens is the only Ming Dynasty Garden outside of China. This tranquil refuge is comprised of a walled garden, ponds teeming with Koi fish, Asian galleries, miniature and large Bonsai trees, shaded retreats and other exotic flora. The Gardens are named after the founder of the first Chinese Republic, a frequent visitor of Vancouver.
An interesting side note to the construction of the gardens is that fifty-two craftsmen relocated from china to build the roofless, walled structure, complete with several pavilions, never once using a hammer or nail! Don’t forget to visit the gift shop, offering literature, artifacts and souvenirs about the Gardens, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and China. Also, Chinatown is one the most popular neighborhoods in Vancouver. It is the second-largest in North America; the streets lined with authentic restaurants, herb shops, and shopping strips. Chinatown is a must—visit for Vancouver newcomers.
