City of Toronto, Parks and Recreation (416) 392-8186
Toronto’s greatest recreational refuge, Toronto Islands offers a broad tapestry of activities and things to do for any age. Visitors can lounge along the white sand beaches, picnic in one of the many parks or manicured gardens, stroll the boardwalk, jog or rollerblade the paved pedestrian paths, take advantage of boat rentals at the public marina, enjoy volleyball or softball at designated areas, hear live entertainment, explore the amusement rides and petting zoo, or indulge whatever else you can think up to do at this more than 1,300-acre island park.
The primary means of getting to the Islands is by taking the 15-minute ferry ride from the Harbourfront to Centre Island, the hub of most of the area’s activity. Visitors can pick up the ferry at the Mainland Ferry Terminal, located at the Bay Street and Queen’s Quay West Intersection in front of the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel. The journey is quick, inexpensive (under $10 round trip), and rather aesthetic as well, with the city’s skyline serving as an inspiring view. (Call 392-8193 for ferry schedules).
One of the Island’s major attractions, especially for families, is Centreville Amusement Park located on Centre Island. Here, locals and visitors of all ages take advantage of rollercoasters, waterslides, Ferris wheels, and other such entertainment. Additionally, the park offers numerous restaurants, snack bars, and picnic areas. To the west is Hanlan’s Point, featuring a public dock, as well as the Toronto Natural Science School and other historic sites. To the east, Ward’s Island is home to more than 200 residences, and is the premier shopping destination at Toronto Island’s.
