Founded by Sir Edmund Walker and George Reid, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is undoubtedly one of the most revered museums in Canada, frequented by hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The eighth largest museum in North America, the AGO has a collection of more than 24,000 works of art representing European, Canadian, Inuit, modern and contemporary art, dating back more than a millennium.
Some of the museum’s finest pieces can be enjoyed without stepping foot inside. For instance, outside the museum at the northeast corner of the gallery is sculpture by Henry Moore, with more of his works inside the museum. The AGO is also known for housing the finest traveling exhibits in the world, in addition to the thousands of famous pieces that have a permanent home there. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop area as well, offering a variety of treasures all their own.
