In addition to housing some of the most important works in the world of art, the Musee Rodin has witnessed an intriguing history. Built in the early 1700s, the mansion was the residence to several renowned artists, including Matisse, Dunkin, Cocteau and Rilke, before becoming the permanent home of Rodin. However, Rodin would not carry out the rest of his days as owner of the house, for it was taken over by the state in 1911, six years before he died. Nevertheless, after Rodin agreed to turn over his collections to the state in 1916, the mansion was transformed into a museum devoted to the artist no more than a year later.

The Musee Rodin is encompassed by expansive landscaped gardens, within which are many of his best sculptures, including his most famous – “The Thinker.” Visitors should browse the gardens before heading inside to get a glimpse of these amazing pieces, and to experience the museum as a whole.

Inside, the museum houses nearly 500 sculptures, photos, drawings and furnishings, displayed throughout two floors. A self-guided audio tour is available, allowing visitors access to the history, means and methods of this incredible artist as you study his work firsthand. Also, the gift shop offers a brochure that explains Rodin’s work and the collection itself in good detail. The brochure also highlights the major sculpture found in each of the rooms.

A reception and cloakroom are located on the ground floor. Only the ground floor is handicapped-accessible. A cafeteria is open from 10am to 6pm April 1 – September 30, and from 10am to 4:30pm October 1 to December 31.
