With the influence that Pablo Picasso had on the artists that followed him, and his contributions to modernism and the art world, there is no question that this master of cubism should have an entire museum devoted to his genius. And where better than in Paris? Located in the heart of the city’s historic district, the Musee Picasso celebrates the life and work of one of the greatest artists in history.

The building itself is a beautiful 17th century mansion housing more than 250 paintings, 160 sculptures, 16 collages, 29 reliefs, 1,500 drawings, 107 pieces of pottery, 58 notebooks, and his entire collection of engraving works. In addition to Picasso’s own pieces, the museum houses works of art found the artist’s own personal collection, including work from Miro, Renoir, Braque and Rousseau.

A unique aspect of the museum is that it displays Picasso’s art chronologically, beginning with his “Self Portrait” of 1901 and closing with his “Old Man Seated” from 1971. This allows visitors more insight into the various stages that Picasso went through with his art from 1894--1972. Some of the most famous pieces displayed in the museum include his “Demoiselles d'Avignon” and “Olga dans un Fauteuil.”

The Musee Picasso also offers an outdoor garden and café so visitors can relax, enjoy some refreshments, and contemplate the mastery they just got up-close and personal with. Don’t forget the bookshop either, offering a wide selection of in-depth information about Picasso and modernism.
