Boulevard Saint-Michel
Situated on Paris’ left bank, the Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the city’s most extravagant recreational areas. With more than 2,500 acres, the park serves as a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Visitors and locals alike can be found roaming the landscaped greens, or lounging by the fountain, or indulging in some other form of activity under the sun.
Scattered throughout the grounds is an amazing fleet of statues, namely in the form of women. They surround the pond and tower above flowerbeds, making the park both naturally attractive and a manmade wonder. At the head of the garden, adjacent to the pond, sits the Palaise du Luxembourg. Built in the early 17th century, the palace was commissioned by Queen Marie de Medicis, who instructed her architect to have the building resemble the Pitti Place in Florence.
The Jardin du Luxembourg is within close proximity to Paris’ Latin Quarter, one of the most pulsating districts in the city for shopping, dining and nighttime entertainment. Also in propinquity is Sorbonne University, bring a unique generational mix to the surrounding neighborhoods. In addition to soft relaxation, the garden offers activities such as tennis or chess, as well as a distinct sect devoted to children;s activities, including a puppet theater and pony rides.
