Rue de Rivoli
The Jardins des Tuileries are a serene refuge located directly between the renowned Musee du Louvre and the historic Place de La Concord. Laid out by Versailles designer Le Notre, the gardens are centrally located in Paris and serve as a primary recreational area for locals and visitors alike. A wide array of flower beds are scattered throughout the landscaped area, as well as a fleet of statues and two fountains, complete with chairs on the outskirts of their water basins.
Spread out for more than 2,500 acres, the gardens are often used by many local artists, who enjoy the grounds for their tranquility. Many can be seen painting the landscape, capturing a flower on canvas, or sketching one of the many statues. You may also come upon a classroom-sized group of art students using the gardens for inspiration.
A great way for visitors to enjoy the gardens is to start the day at the Musee du Louvre, then head west into the gardens for a refreshing out-of-doors lunch at one of the cafes. Walk off your meal by strolling the greens and keep heading west to the Place de La Concord. After taking in the historic square, strllo down the Champs-Elysees for a shopping spree, a drink at one of the cafes or simply to people-watch. End your little excursion at the famous Arc des Triomphe, one of the most historical monuments in Paris. Take the elevator to the top two view not only the route you just took, but the entire city in general, it is a stunning sight. ---Words and photos by Michael Rando.
