Ella Peterson is a New York telephone answering service operator who, in her habit of getting too involved with her clients, finds herself bewitched by one particular voice. It is the voice of playwright Jeffery Moss, a charming fellow who also enjoys talking with Peterson. But our operator is self-conscious, and reluctant to pursue a deeper affair with the intellectual. But fate would have it otherwise.
