Pubs
& Bars
New
Orleans is a great place to find
pubs and taverns made up in the
decor of the Old French
Quarter. Play a game of
pool, eat a meal, or enjoy
regional beer and brewery
specials. New Orleans has a
wonderful selection of bars to
choose from. Take a look at
the places below and enjoy your
stay in the Big Easy.
Igor's
Lounge & Game Room
2133 Saint Charles Ave.
(504) 522-2145
Igor's
is definitely the only pool
hall/bar/restaurant/laundry-mat in
town. Several scenes from the
motion picture "The Pelican
Brief" were shot in and
around Igor’s. Located on St.
Charles next to the trolley-line,
the bar offers great drinks at
reasonable prices. The attached
restaurant (Igor’s Garlic Clove)
offers many delicious New Orleans
favorites.
Acadian
Brewing Beer Garden
201 N Carrolton Ave.
(504) 483-9003
Located
adjacent to the Acadian Brewery in
Mid-City, this pub offers some of
the best beer in New Orleans. Live
music slides perfectly into the
eclectic atmosphere. The crowd is
generally tame, aged anywhere from
21 to 55. Try the award winning
Acadian Amber fresh off the brew
line.
Butler's
Restaurant & Bar
140 Millaudon St.
(504) 861-2326
Butler’s
was opened recently by a former
bartender at the famous Snake
& Jake’s Christmas Club
Lounge. It retains the Snake’s
feel of being in the dark basement
of a pimp’s run-down abode in
1983. Patrons can play an
assortment of original Atari 2600
video games while listening to one
of the best Jukeboxes in the city.
Butler’s is great place to go
after you’ve gone everywhere
else that evening; the bar starts
to get happening around two in the
morning.
The
Club
4336 Magazine St.
(504) 895-9401
Known
also as Ms. Mae’s, the Club
takes the award for cheapest
drinks in the city. Schlitz for a
dollar? Guinness for $2.50? Mixed
drinks for 50 cents? For the
price, this bar is a surprisingly
exceptional place to spend an
evening. Patrons can mingle with
an incredibly diverse crowd and
play a plethora of bar games.
There are three pool tables, many
classic arcade games, darts,
foosball, and much more. If you’re
tired of live music and just want
to relax and have fun, the Club is
the place to be.
Ernie
K-Doe Mother-In-Law Lounge
1500 N Claiborne Ave.
(504) 947-1078
The
Emperor of the World, Ernie K-Doe
along with his lovely wife,
Antoinette, also known as the
Empress of the World are your
hosts and guides into the world of
"Ernie K-Doe: the living
legend". Ernie K-Doe, a James
Brown-esque New Orleans native,
had only one hit single in the 60’s
for his song
"Mother-In-Law." He’s
been living off the fame ever
since. This bar is hilarious. In
addition to live entertainment and
soul food, you may be lucky enough
to hear Ernie himself utter one of
his many legendary self-indulgent
catch-phrases (such as: "I’m
Ernie K-Doe, I know you want to
touch me. Touch me!")
Cooter
Brown’s Tavern
509 S. Carrolton Ave.
(504) 866 9104
The
ultimate beer tavern, serves over
425 brands of domestic and
imported bottled beers, as well as
42 different beers on tap.
Certainly New Orleans best place
for a cold frosty beer. Video
poker, pool tables, 8 televisions
and some really tasty food make
this worth the trip uptown on the
trolley line.
Snake
& Jake Christmas Club
7612 Oak St.
(504) 861-2802
"Snake’s
is a local place. People come with
their dogs. People are naked here.
My room is cold. Jamin poured red
wine down my blouse." This
non-sensical description was taken
from an inebriated girl sitting
with a small group of naked people
at 3:36AM at the famed Snake &
Jake Christmas Club Lounge. There
is a sort of unwritten rule at
Snake’s that if you’re naked,
you can drink for free. This bar
is small and dark and open till 7
or 8 in the morning. Pass by Snake’s
before you go home.
Pat
O'Brien's Bar
718 Saint Peter St.
(504) 525-4823
If
you're a tourist, you are almost
required to visit Pat O'Brien’s.
Located directly off of Bourbon
Street, Pat O’s is home to the
original New Orleans Hurricane.
The price of the souvenir
Hurricane glass is included in the
price of the drink, so the next
morning, you can remember what it
was that got you so drunk. There
are several bars, a water fountain
the spits fire as well as water,
and great live piano-players.
Saturn
Bar
3067 Saint Claude Ave.
(504) 949-7532
At
the Saturn Bar, you get the
sensation of drinking in your
Grandmother’s garage. What at
first glance appears to be
clutter, is actually a room filled
with strange artwork donated by
some of New Orleans’s best
contemporary artists. The drinks
don’t get very complicated; it’s
mostly beers in bottles. There is
a pool table that is currently
being used as a printing table for
souvenir Saturn Bar panties. This
bar is not in the best
neighborhood, so park close to the
door.
R
Bar & Inn
1431 Royal St.
(504) 948-7499
Located
in the Faubourg Marienui between
Esplanade and Elysian Fields
Avenue, the R-Bar is as trendy as
it is artsy. It is complete with
all the bar essentials (pool
table, video poker, ATM, etc.)
plus an old fashioned dental chair
and a Harley-Davidson above the
bar. The R-Bar is a great place to
spend happy hour.
