Miami Historical MuseumEach year, thousands of tourists are lured to Miami for the beautiful beaches, sexy nightlife and unique Latin flavor. With so much to do, many visitors tend to overlook the historical dimension of the city. The Historical Museum of Southern Florida offers a one-stop comprehensive look at the fascinating past of Miami, South Florida and the Caribbean.

The Museum takes you on a journey through the many faces and cultures that have made their mark on the region in the past 10,000 years. From Native Americans to Spanish conquistadors to Cuban exiles, South Florida’s rich history comes to life through the many exhibits that are presented each year. The facility houses an extensive collection of precious artifacts and archives including the Miami Centennial Quilt. For those interested in further exploration, a Research Center provides the public with access to valuable study materials. Weekend Historic Tours are regularly scheduled and are taken either by foot, by bus or by boat.

Whether your interest lies in Spanish missions and Tequesta Indian villages or in the property boom of the 1920s, the Museum offers a wide variety of tours given by historian Dr. Paul George. Explore the architectural remnants of a glitzy Art Deco past in Miami Beach’s historic district. Visit the sites and structures where the early pioneers first settled as you drift along the Miami River.

A few other themes scheduled for 2000 include the "Coconut Grove Walking Tour" and "Miami 100 Years Ago."

Every February, the Museum hosts the Annual Miami International Map Fair, bringing in antique map dealers from all over the world for an exhibit and map marketplace. The program also includes lectures, workshops and receptions. Call the Museum for registration information.

The Historical Museum is located in the Metro-Dade Cultural Center Plaza on Downtown Miami’s Flagler Street. The plaza also conveniently houses the main public library and the Miami Art Museum. Visitors may park in the Cultural Center Garage and take a pedestrian bridge into the plaza.
