If fine arts films
are more your thing, you’ll find several movie houses in
Chicago showing the best in international, documentary and
experimental film productions. The four main theaters that
make these films available usually offer different films
so there is a good variety to choose from.
Music Box Theatre - 3733
N. Southport Ave., 773.871.6604. This movie theater
opened on August 22, 1929 as an alternative to the larger
downtown film houses. It featured second-run films until
1977 after which time it was used only sporadically until
1983 when it was renovated. First rivival and repertory
films were shown with cult films, independent films and
documentaries added eight years later.
Facets Multimedia - 1517
W. Fullerton Ave., 773.281.4114. Screens artistically
significant films and videos in two theaters daily.
Screenings include festivals, director retrospectives,
premiers, rediscoveries and special programs. Facets
Multimedia, founded in 1975, also offers mail-order videos
and video rentals.
The Film Center at
the School of the Art Institute - 280 S. Columbus Dr.,
312.443.3737. The Film Center was founded in 1972 to
contribute to the understanding and appreciation of
significant films from all over the world and throughout
film history. The Film Center offers 525 programs yearly
and 3-5 series per month.
Fine Arts Theatre - 418
S. Michigan Ave., 312.939.3700. This theater has
presented artistically significant films and videos since
1975, showcasing the work of many independent film and
video makers as well as entire cinematic movements. Films
are shown in a variety of programs including theatrical
premieres, retrospectives, festivals and rediscoveries.
